Playgrounds of Paris: June 17-21

Sante!

We arrived in Paris by train!  (I love that I can write that sentence.)  The ride from Amsterdam was relaxing and fun - especially with a bit of wine and cheese!  - and we were excited to enjoy this wonderful city with Aunt Kimmy.  However, arriving in Paris at rush hour at Gar du Nord train station was a bit crazy.  Kim captured a funny series of us (once again) trying to pose for a family picture beneath the train schedule board, and then we had a scary moment where we got separated at the insanely busy taxi queue.  But soon we were driving through the City of Light and arriving at our flat just blocks from the Eiffel Tower.  Definitely magical.

This visit to Paris would be unlike others that Kim, Sam or I had done before, for several reasons.  First, poor Kim got very very sick after we arrived and was miserable in bed most of the time.  She bravely rallied on several jaunts throughout the city and was so worried about getting the girls sick (it was a miracle they didn't get sick since they were sharing a room!).  And second, we decided to focus on a "Playgrounds of Paris" tour, instead of the incredible museums and long, lovely walks across the city that we had done before.  And practically in our back yard was a playground for all ages: the  Champs du Mars.  Not only was the Eiffel Tower just a few blocks from our lovely flat, but the Champs du Mars Park was full of fun diversions for the kids and so easily accessible.  We had never stayed in this part of Paris before, usually preferring the Latin Quarter, but with the girls along it was perfect, and not as touristy and cheesy as I thought.   Champs du Mars has at least three playgrounds, a marionette theater, a carousel, go-carts, pony rides, lots of car-free room for running... all with an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower.

Of course we took a trip up the Eiffel Tower, which was a must-do on Morgan's list.  Sasha was not very interested, but at the last minute decided to go, so we got to experience it as a family.  After not too long of a line (complete with some pushy Asian line-cutters and deaf Germans that were signing with Sam!) we made it to the first level.   Morgan was anxious to head to the very top with Sam, while Sasha (and I, frankly) were content to stay where we were and meet up with them later.  My little one was a bit reluctant, refusing to pose for a family picture, but I have a very sweet memory of her and I atop the Eiffel Tower.  I was getting better at going with the flow, trying to take it all in, and enjoying a fleeting moment of travel and of childhood.  So we stood there, eating delicious croissants together, looking out over an amazing city, with Sasha's little fists held up to her eyes for "binoculars."  A little piece of time that will stay with me for a long, long time.  But one that also reminds me of Aunt Kimmy's "Croissant Rule!" It states that every day you are in Paris, you get to have a croissant!  The girls loved that (and I was absolutely in favor as well), and Morgan made it official by putting it in writing!

Just in case we might forget....
While we spent a lot of time in Champs du Mars, that was certainly not the only playground in Paris!  The mother of all playgrounds happened to be at Sam's and my favorite park in Paris: Luxembourg Gardens.  Of course we had never seen it or ventured to that part of the park before kids, but boy was it worth it.  We were a bit surprised you had to pay to get into this playground, but it was a fantastic place for the girls.  Multiple climbing structures with tree houses, a toy train, huge sand area, benches for the parents to watch (and enjoy wine and cheese on), and an awesome zipline that Morgan loved!  It took her a while to get strong enough to grab on and ride it, but she must have gone on that ten times, along with all the other big kids.  I was surprised at how many people we heard speaking American English there.  It seemed to be the place to go if you're vacationing with your kids in Paris.

When we weren't enjoying Paris' parks, we did do some strolling through the city, around Notre Dame and along the Seine and my favorite vendors with the green box stands.  Papa Ron would be proud that we enjoyed amazing ice cream at 11am on Ile Saint Louis!  One night, Sam and I even got to have a late dinner at a little restaurant close to our flat.  It was classic, wonderful French dining run by a husband and wife.  I even got my rear in gear and went on a nice morning run around Paris - a little gift to myself.

One day we also made a trek up to Monmartre, which turned out to be a slog with grumpy kids, but we did it!  It was followed by the biggest meltdown (all of us really, not just the kids) while on the streets of Paris when we were momentarily lost and unable to find our connection to the RER train.  Fortunately, Kim had stocked us with Dutch carmel waffle cookies so the crisis could have been much worse!  We learned that we pushed our activity boundaries a bit too far, but if we hadn't we wouldn't have seen much at all.  The kids were fine and we moved on, just like when we have meltdowns at home!

Paris is different every time I'm there.  The first time was a chilly New Year's with Sam, the second was in the heat of summer with Sam's parents, and this time it was with my two kids.  No matter the season or age or stage of life, Paris is always a good idea.  And this time around, thanks to my girls, I definitely got to play a lot more!

Hup Holland! June 13-17

Gorgeous canals in Delft
So I kind of fell in love with Holland.  I wasn't expecting to.  But I did.  And that had a LOT to do with the wonderful friends we visited there.  Sam and I wanted to incorporate into our trip seeing old friends from our Prague days.  We had already visited with Angie in London, but a big part of the rest of our itinerary was based upon being able to visit more friends.  Our first stop after London was The Netherlands, or “Everlands,” as Sasha called it.  Our friend, Jenny, whom we taught with in Prague, lived near The Hague with her Dutch husband, Victor, and their three gorgeous girls.  They were kind enough to invite us to stay with them for the weekend (which we all realized was definitely not long enough!) and we had such a lovely time.

I had never been to Holland before, and it felt like it was right out of a picture book.  Jenny took us on a few bike rides around town, through forests, and even out to the beach on the North Sea.  Everything is so idyllic – canals lined with lily pads and ducks, fabulous parks for children around every corner, and even an occasional windmill.  But the best part was reconnecting with our friends and watching our five girls play together like they had always been playmates.  It was such a perfect break from busy London, and the girls were so happy to be around friends and toys and fun.  But even for the adults, it felt like hardly any time had passed since we were hanging out with Jenny in Prague.  And though we were just meeting Vic, it felt like we had always known him.  Sam and Vic became fast friends, talking a lot about beer and business!

Not that our trip could get better, but it did.  The first night we arrived was also the opening of the World Cup, and Holland was playing.  The neighborhood and towns were decorated with orange and the World Cup was being promoted everywhere, from bars to grocery stores.  Holland was not expected to do very well,  according to Victor, so it was quite a delightful surprise when they beat their opponent with 5 goals!  Needless to say, Sam and Vic had a very fun evening watching together. So not only did we have a fantastic time with Vic & Jenny, becoming fast friends, but coincidentally, Sam had visited Rotterdam (very near to The Hague) a couple weeks before the girls and I arrived in London, where he presented research to a university.  The visit went quite well and they extended an invitation for him to come back, possibly for sabbatical.  Now that we have spent a bit of time in Holland and have awesome friends there, I quickly decided that Rotterdam would be a great place for sabbatical in a couple years!  We will see....

We then spent two nights in Amsterdam, a city I had never been to but had always wanted to visit.  It is truly unique.  Not the most ideal place to take kids, but beautiful and full of history.  But the best part of going there was meeting up with Kim!  She was waiting there for us with snacks and wine and local knowledge, since she had been there a few times before.

Our perfect weather had come to an end (or maybe it was just because we were in Holland), but we had a bit of drizzle and cool weather.  So the first day we started off filling our tummies at The Pancake Bakery.  That is definitely one place where the kids were happy!  A huge pancake with all kinds of sugary stuff on top plus a stuffed animal for the girls.  Good times!  We then took a hop on-hop off canal cruise around the city, which was perfect for little kid legs and perfect for us adults to not have to navigate this watery, circular city!

Crazy sugary fun at the Pancake Bakery!
Yay!  Aunt Kimmy is here!

The obligatory playground - only 2 blocks from our flat
We stayed in a one bedroom flat in the Jordaan neighborhood, and found it using Airbnb, which was super cool and so convenient.  The girls checked out Dutch cartoons on TV (Netflix doesn't work in Holland or France it turns out), ate the best apple pie on the planet, and visited a nearby playground.  They got to play happily in a big sand area alongside Dutch kids our second morning, while Sam and I watched our two little world travelers-in-the-making.  There was one funny Amsterdam moment as we walked by an "adult" shop.  Morgan made the comment about some goofy thing in the window, "That guy has a funny nose."  And after being in the city of bicycles, I didn't care if I ever saw one again.  They were everywhere!  I still have no idea how people find their bikes once they park them.

And after a wonderful few days in Holland, our journey continues on the train to Paris!  What a life!
